Kids today are receiving national attention
to find ways to support their understanding about the food system
that feeds them. We all believe familiarity with your local food
system empowers us to make healthier choices. Most people agree in
agriculture communities, such as Lewis County, that local organic
farmers represents the best choice for strong, healthy communities
and environments. Bring your family to meet a strong advocate for
local organic farming like farmer Susan Kyle who works diligently
to support a local food system in her county. Head out to the Farm
Field Days as Winlock Meadows Farm presents a weekend to give your
kids a first hand experience to smell the earth's potential to grow
healthy crops, and see how it is done. You are sure to feel the power
of stewardship for the land just like your host farmer Susie feels
everyday.
My name is John Duran known in Eugene, Oregon as the OutRaw Chef.
In Eugene, I organize Kid's in the Kitchen programs, a hands-on workshops
at the local Red Barn Natural Food Store. This store purchases local,
organic produce for their produce displays. Part of my program introduces
kids to this produce display that represent all the local varieties
of seasonal vegetables. Our hands-on recipes reflect the availability
so that kids can understand thier regional crops. Later in the program,
a farmer is introduced to describe the type of work they do to produce
all the wonderful foods we shop for at natural food stores throughout
the county. Photos of the farm are shared and invitations are scheduled.
Parents in the meantime are upstairs listening to Phyllis Lynn, a
living food community educator. For more information see, www.outrawchef.com
Last September, I attended a 10-day, intensive internship at Winlock
Meadows Farm. I worked on the fields harvesting for CSA's and farmer's
markets located in Olympia, Yelm, Chahalis and Longview. I set up
food demonstrations at each market to engage shoppers about the quality
of produce grown at our farm (I met many regular customers familiar
with farmer Susie's quality produce).
Now I will be returning to participate at the Farm Field Days. I
will be visiting and participating at the Winlock Meadows Farm from
October 31st until November 2nd. I will be setting up a hands-on
workshop next to the greenhouse for any kids who attend. Two workshops
will be scheduled for Saturday and one on Sunday. When you arrive,
ask for the signup sheet for the workshop, and also, the harvest
dinner which I will be preparing. I look forward to sharing the abundance
of information found in our local, organic farms.
sproutfully yours,
OutRaw Chef, John Duran
